BRIKA DIY: 3 simple-as-can-be summer updos to try tomorrow

Simple, no-fuss and off-the-neck is the name of the game when it comes to summer updos that are elevated beyond the classic messy bun and high ponytail. Keep cool in the heat with these three effortless looks that can each be pulled off in under five minutes flat. Try these tomorrow!

The twisted top-do

This dead-easy ‘do is a sophisticated and pretty twist (pun intended!) on the classic top bun.

What you’ll need:

  • 3 hair elastics
  • Bobby pins
  • Hairspray

Directions:

1. Tie brushed hair in a high ponytail. Split the pony in half with your fingers.

2. Divide one half of your ponytail into two, twisting the pieces around one another to form a rope. Tie a hair elastic around the end.

3. Repeat on other side of your pony and secure with an elastic. You will have two rope-like segments of hair.

4. Holding the ends of both sides, loosely twist/wrap the pieces around the base of your ponytail, spiraling in the same direction until you’ve formed a topknot. Think effortless; the bun should be on the looser side to complete your easy, breezy look.

5. Tuck the rope ends into the bun, and bobby pin them to the base to secure them in place. Spritz your bun with hairspray to keep flyaways at bay.

The final look will be pretty and polished.

The double-knot ponytail

This Pinterest-worthy pony is easy enough to pull off before heading to the office, but pretty enough that you’ll want to repeat it for a wedding or fancy event.

What you’ll need:

  • 1 hair elastic
  • Bobby pins

Directions:

1. Divide your hair into two sections; a top and bottom half. Divide the top half into two sections (behind each ear) and tie into a knot.

2. Tie a second knot underneath the first and tighten by pulling both ends in opposite directions.

HairTut2_23. Tuck the two ends under the bottom half of your hair. (It’s okay if the knot becomes loosened, this will create a less fussy look.) Tie with a hair elastic to create a low ponytail.

4. Take a piece of hair from the underside of the low pony and wrap it around the hair elastic to cover any exposed elastic. Secure underneath the ponytail with a bobby pin.

5. Gently pull out sections of the knot to create a more undone look. Secure any pieces that come undone with bobby pins.

The end result will be a sophisticated and stunning low pony.

The bubble-wrapped ponytail

Inspired by runway and red carpet looks, this ponytail is a great look to wear from day to night.

What you’ll need:

  • 3-4 hair elastics (depending on the length of your hair)
  • Bobby pins
  • A comb/brush for teasing (a comb is more effective)
  • Hairspray

Directions:

1. Tie brushed hair in a high ponytail.

2. Take a piece of hair from the underside of low pony and wrap it around the hair elastic to cover any exposed elastic. Secure underneath the ponytail with a bobby pin.

HairTut3_23. Tease the pony with a comb or brush in an upward motion to create volume.

4. Tie another hair elastic on the ponytail 3-4 inches down. Create a “bubbled” look by loosening hair above the elastic. Cover the hair elastic with a strand of hair, like in step 2.

Once done bubbling, keep hair in place by spritzing with hairspray. Go out and conquer your day!
