A look back: DREAM

By now you probably know that my old blog, In Life and In Fashion, is what serendipitously brought Jen and I together. I recently found this post on my blog from 2011 and had to share it! It just goes to show that one small change (or word) can make a big difference.

A dear friend of mine told me recently that for the last few years, she has chosen one word to focus on for the entire year. No long lists, or complicated resolutions, just one word that would guide her as she moved beyond the newness of January into the rest of the year.

I love this idea for a few of reasons:

1) Easy to remember:  You don’t have to refer back to a list in a specific notebook to recall what you wanted to focus on for the year.  Please, anyone can remember one word.

2) So specific…:  Narrowing all your hopes for the year into one word involves more thought than throwing a laundry list of goals onto a piece of paper.  You need to really reflect to come up with an over-arching theme or your guiding principle or key value for the year.  On the other hand, your intuition may help you come up with a word so quickly that you must go with it!

3) …Yet broad: My friends word is Patience.  Think of how that word can apply to so many different situations.  Patience at work, with your family, your husband, your friends, in the line at the grocery store, and with yourself.

Choosing a word for the year is like having your own personal mantra that you carry around with you in your pocket ready to pull out whenever you need it.

My word for 2011 is:

Dreams

Because I want to fearlessly pursue my dreams this year.  Whenever I’m confronted with a choice to do something that scares me or makes me uncomfortable or take the easier, more comfortable route, I’ll remember to choose my dreams.

What is your word?

It could be: NOW. Because you want to be mindful in every moment and accept each for what it is.

Or LOVE. Because you want to focus on loving, accepting and caring for yourself more.

Or JUMP.  Because this is your year to be make giant leaps in your career or personal life!

I loved reading this post because I have the same feelings. It’s always nice to share a feeling. I wrote a post last week about my word for 2014 (Imagine) and reflecting on my word from 2013 (forward). I love the idea of carefully choosing my word and I agree that it becomes much like a mantra. Happy New Year Kena!

I absolutely love this idea! I’ve always struggled with trying to figure out what exactly to do for my new years resolutions. Usually its something along the lines of trying to lead a healthier life, I think my word for 2014 would be BREATHE. Too often in my life I focus so much on everything I’m doing and all the things that I should be doing rather than taking a moment to enjoy the simplicity and perfection of every moment.
